What Makes Vinyl Siding Sustainable?

November 26, 2022

It has been a crusade for the building community to come up with materials that are highly sustainable. Indeed, we’ve come this far as we paved the way to finding solutions for homes that can stand the test of time and Mother Nature. In this post, trusted siding and window installation expert TJ Exteriors Inc. discusses vinyl siding’s sustainability.

Why Vinyl Siding

It’s arguably the only cladding product that you can recycle several times, allowing the creation of new vinyl siding from old ones. However, knowing that its recyclable isn’t enough. You should also know where it stands when it comes to the life cycle. The truth is, other materials can also be recycled, but it won’t be recycled into equal quality products.

The Closed Loop Program

Building products manufacturer CertainTeed® has started a “closed-loop” program, acquiring a partnership between its distributors and recyclers. They have tasked them to leave bins at their warehouses around the country where contractors can bring scraps and old vinyl sidings to the distributors. The surrendered scraps and vinyl sidings undergo recycling. CertainTeed then buys it from the recyclers. Everyone wins in this setup.

  1. The contractors, who can also be door and window installers, save on fees and can promote that they’re recycling materials.
  2. Distributors can market about their “green” product and they also build a partnership from contractors who can provide visibility of the distributor’s product to potential customers.
  3. The recycler obtains paying customers for the recycled product
  4. A sustainable vinyl siding product is produced in the market.

As homeowners, you should choose wisely when making difficult decisions about your homes.
